Here you are going to learn 7 main tips to avoid spam filters and finally get your emails delivered to the recipient’s main email inbox!
Mailing lists and commercial emails are still one of the milestones of the advertising world and it is good practice to keep our customers engaged in our new initiatives with a newsletter or to send messages to potential ones.
However, many business owners or employees involved in marketing activities claim not to be able to reach the prospect’s inbox because they get blocked by spam filters, ending up sending tons of emails for nothing!
Thus, how can we avoid spam filters and get our emails delivered to the recipient main inbox? Here are some tips to increase the chances of your emails being read:
1. AVOID SPAM TRIGGER WORDS (ESPECIALLY IN THE SUBJECT)
If you use sales-related words asking the person to perform an action such as: Call now, Get it now, Get started, Don’t delete!, Buy, Apply, Act now, Limited time, Offer, Promotion, and so on… It’s like you are telling the spam filters “Hey! I’m a damn spammer, would you please block me?”
In other words, to avoid spam filters try not to sound as you are trying to sell something or to promote your business at all. Yes, we know that… that’s exactly what you are trying to do! Try to use different words though, or ask the person a question that would eventually lead to an actual promotion further ahead in the conversation. The true obstacle is the first contact, it’s very unlikely that you will be blocked after the prospect has replied.
By the way, using too many exclamation marks (!!!) will produce the same effect. So, don’t do it!!!!! 🙂
2. REDUCE THE NUMBER OF IMAGES
Videos and images are generally used to design commercial emails and showcase products and services, that is why using too many images while designing your email’s content is going to trigger spam filters.
Therefore, consider reducing the number of images or even using just simple text emails, the latter has probably the greatest chance to avoid spam filters and get to its destination.
3. AVOID TOO MANY LINKS
Just as using spam trigger words, some spam filters may interpret various links attached as an attempt to sell something, which is actually the truth as we’re trying to do business here!
However, be smart and put one or two links if you have to. By doing so you will avoid also this spam filter.
4. AVOID TOO MANY FONTS AND FONT SIZES
Again, be smart…
For example, would you ever use plenty of font types and sizes to send a message to someone you know? Of course not, using various font styles is considered to be typical of commercial emails and these emails are usually blocked by spam filters. Thus, stick to one font, and use a couple of sizes for titles and text.
5. CHOOSE A RELIABLE ESP (EMAIL SERVICE PROVIDER)
Use an Email Service Providers which have gained a good reputation during the years to have more chances to avoid spam filters and reach your customers.
To clarify, if the ESP’s clients send out valuable and relevant content and have high scores on their IP addresses their ESP becomes trustworthy. Consider that most of the people you are targeting will use Gmail, Yahoo! Mail or Outlook as ESP and that these reputable ESPs tend to block IP addresses of spammy providers.
The ESP is a choice most probably you have already done. However, if you are experiencing high rates of bounced emails because of spam filters you should definitely evaluate to get a new address from a reliable ESP.
6. AVOID GETTING IN SPAM TOO OFTEN
Finally, keep in mind that the more you end up blocked by spam filters, the more your sender reputation will be affected, and you will be more likely to end up in spam inboxes next time! Thus, start applying these tips now before it’s too late.
Moreover, be careful in using email contacts supplied from untrusted sources that might not be updated or contacts you got by your own but who didn’t ask to join any mailing list as there is a higher chance to be put in spam inbox or to be marked as a spammer.
7. CHECK YOUR IP ADDRESS REPUTATION
To conclude, what if after having followed all these steps for a while you still can’t get your email delivered to people’s main inboxes?
In this case, most probably the mistakes made in the past with previous campaigns have affected your sender reputation and your IP address is not trustworthy anymore.
Therefore, if you are looking for an actual solution just change your sender address and, as already mentioned in the tip number 5, you should take the chance to choose a reliable ESP which would boost the performance of your email marketing.
In addition, you can even check if you actually have a good sender reputation of not through many websites that calculate your IP address reliability, such as Mailgun.
